The application window for Special Class Railway Apprentices (SCRA) 2014 is open now, announced the the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) earlier this week.
UPSC conducts the SCRA exam to select eligible candidates for the post of Special Class Apprentices in the Mechanical Department of Indian Railway. Interested candidates who meet the eligibility criteria set by the commission can apply online at the official UPSC website (www.upsconline.nic,in) before November 5, 2013.

Vacancy Details and eligibility criteria
The total number of vacancies, as announced by the commission, stands at 42.
The age of the candidates must be between 17 to 21 years as on Jan 1, 2014. However, there may be scopes for flexibility in the age limit depending upon the existing Govt. guidelines.
Candidates are mandatorily required to have passed 10+2 or Intermediate examinations from any government/UGC recognized board with 1st or 2nd division (or an equivalent grade). In addition, candidates are required to have passed with Mathematics and at least one of Chemistry and Physics as subjects in their 10+2 or Intermediate.
Similarly, Graduates with Mathematics and at least one of Physics and Chemistry as their subjects can also apply for SCRA 2014.
Application fee and selection process
All unreserved categories are required to pay INR 100/ as SCRA application fee, whereas Female/SC/ST and physically handicapped candidates can apply for free.
The fee must be deposited in any branch of the State Bank of India using cash or Internet Banking. Apart from SBI, candidates can also pay their application fee in several other banks within the State Bank Group (State Bank of Hyderabad, State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, State Bank of Patiala, State Bank of Mysore and State Bank of Travancore).
The recruitment process will be held in two stages: Written examination and Personal Interview (PI). Those who clear the Written exam will be asked to appear in the PI. Those who qualify in the second and final round, i.e. the PI, will be recruited as SCRA by the Indian Railway.
