Job Opportunities in Civil Engineering
Yes there are a huge opportunity in Civil Engineering recently in NHAI and PWD there are 70,000 Vacancies are short
As the country builds or upgrades over 68,000 km of national highways, more than 35 airports, two dozen of the biggest railway stations, countrywide freight corridors, a whole new hospitality and housing industry, it’s faced with a critical roadblock: an alarming dearth of civil engineers, the skilled professionals who are needed to put each building block in its precise place.
Industry experts estimate that India faces a shortage of over 70,000 civil engineers each year. Not surprising, when you have just one in ten IIT students opting for the civil engineering discipline and only 200 of the 1700 engineering colleges approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) offer the course.
All IITs taken together graduate barely 500-600 civil engineering students and estimates are that not more than a total of 10,000 civil engineers are created in India per year. In fact, between a third and a half of all civil engineering undergraduates either drop off that stream soon after college and take up the more lucrative IT sector. That explains why private engineering colleges have either been reducing civil engineering seats or just shutting down this department over the last few years.
How civil engineering lost the battle over the last two decades is a story of how bricks and mortar lost their glamour to clicks — the IT boom, fuelled by a growing army of footsoldiers in computer science and electronics reduced civil engineering to an “old economy” discipline.
With heftier pay packets and global opportunities offered by the IT industry, an entire generation of engineering students/aspirants switched over from traditional engineering disciplines to the newer ones. In this churning, civil engineering finally ended at the bottom of the student’s wishlist while computer science, biotechnology and electronics engineering raced up. Even those who would get civil engineering in an IIT, for example — based on their rank in the joint entrance examination — were dropping out if they got computers at a lesser-reputed college.
“So the demand steadily dropped and colleges started to shut down the civil engineering departments. Most of them replaced it with IT/electronics or communication courses that offer higher salaries. Of the total 1700 engineering colleges, just some 200 would probably be offering civil engineering as a discipline,” says Prof Harish C Rai , Advisor, Engineering & Technology Bureau, AICTE.

Public Sector Banks to recruit over 30000 in 2009-10 – ET
Public Sector Banks to recruit over 30000 in 2009-10
Public sector banks will hire 30,000 personnel during 2009-10, even as India Inc, facing the heat of the global financial meltdown, has put a virtual halt on recruitment as reported by Economic Times
“As per the preliminary estimates, public sector banks are expected to hire over 30,000 people during 2009-10,” Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) director M Balachandran said.
The institute, promoted by PSU banks and the Reserve Bank, has been rendering assistance to financial sector in the activities of employees’ selection, promotion and placement. A large number of employment opportunities have emerged in the banking sector owing to branch expansion by various lenders, business growth and aggressive marketing, he said.
Balachandran, former CMD of the Bank of India, said recruitment would also fill up the gap created due to large scale of superannuation in many banks. At the same time, in bid to increase fee-based income banks have started activities like distribution insurance policies, mutual fund schemes and other financial products. This has created need to recruit some specialised manpower in those segment, he added.
Many lenders, including the United Bank of India and the Indian Bank, have already issued advertisement for recruitment. For example, Kolkata-based UBI is hiring 900 probationary officers and 500 clerks. Besides, it is also hiring 100 specialised officers across various departments. Indian Bank has invited application for the post of 700 clerks to be recruited during the course of year while Hyderabad-based Andhra Bank is planning to recruit 550 clerks.Andhra Bank will also hire 295 probationary officer and 150 officers in other category. On the contrary to the trend in the banking segment, many sectors including information Technology and textile are handing over pink slips to their staff.

Recession or Not – Find Jobs through Internet and Placement Consultants
The global financial recession has impacted the developed Western Countries, Japan and other export-based economies the most. Though the Indian economy has been rocked the least because of the strength of our financial systems and 70% of the economy’s dependence on the huge domestic market demand, yet we have not been totally insulated.
The mood is somber, astronomical salaries of the last few years are a distant dream, large scale recruitment by the I.T and B.P.O companies have been curtailed, the infrastructure and real estate sectors are facing recession and the overall growth momentum has come down.
Today over 50% of our population is under 25 years of age and all the young boys and girls have one common aspiration-i.e. To find a good first or second job. While this may sound more difficult, yet it is still very much possible as Indian talent has been well recognized and the economy is still growing, though at a slower rate.
What needs to be understood?
- You must be prepared to do something different in addition to your usual job search efforts.
- Recognize that every threat also presents an opportunity-for the persons who are ready to spot this.
- Necessity is the mother of invention.
- Smart effort is the need of the hour.
What needs to be done?
- Recognizing the reach and power of the internet, first step should be to register yourself with the top two or three job sites so that you can post your resume on-line. The top National Newspapers are also managing their dedicated job-sites and these also need to be tapped due to their vast reach. Since most of the employers are using these sites for identifying suitable candidates, the search software used by the sites helps in matching the critical parameters like age, qualification, experience etc. to the job requirements and does the initial screening.
This can give a much wider exposure to the prospective job seekers.
Post your resume NOW to the following websites
- Simultaneously register yourself with sector specific ‘job placement consultants’ having a good standing in the industry and a decent track record. They have a better reach and depth of penetration that any individual. The major advantage is that the consultants help in complete follow up for the interview, salary negotiations etc. They also provide useful guidance at every step and help you in projecting your best profile, as they understand each and every employer’s specific focus and critical evaluation criterion.
- The job-sites provide a fixed format in which you can post your curriculum vitae, but you must prepare your resume in advance properly and carefully. (Read ‘Tips for designing an effective C.V’ by Ranjna Vedhera) This will enable you to put together the relevant details and facts in an organized and coordinated manner. You can use your C.V as an effective tool to get your profile across to the prospective employers with whom this will be your first point of contact.
- The job-sites also regularly project new requirements (and up to last six months) that can be matched with your own profile and the C.V posted, i.e. if you are not registered earlier with that site or it has not already matched your resume with the new job.
CONCLUSION
You must stay alert and employ the correct methodology to spot the job opportunities so that your efforts enable you to touch base with widely dispersed employers .You must believe that opportunities are there and you can get hold of them, with persistent efforts and patience.
Good Luck.
