Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all India examination that primarily tests the comprehensive understanding of the candidates in various undergraduate subjects in Engineering/Technology/Architecture and post-graduate level subjects in Science. The GATE score of a candidate reflects a relative performance level in a particular subject in the exam.
Admission to Postgraduate Courses (Master’s and Doctoral) in the country, with MHRD and other Government Scholarships/Assistantships in Engineering / Technology / Architecture/Science, is open to those who qualify in GATE. The GATE score is also used by some PSUs for their recruitment
Validity of GATE 2016 score will be for a period of THREE YEARS ONLY from the date of announcement of results. Examinations for all the papers will be conducted as Computer Based Test only. For some of the papers, the examination will be conducted in multiple sessions.
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs at Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) jointly administer the conduct of GATE. The operations related to GATE in each of the 8 zones are managed by a zonal GATE Office at the IITs or IISc. The Organizing Institute (OI) is responsible for the end-to-end process and coordination amongst the administering Institutes. The Organizing Institute for GATE 2016 is Indian Institute of Science

For GATE 2016 Examination, candidates can apply for only one of the 23 papers. The syllabus for each of the papers is given separately.
The GATE examination consists of a single paper of 3-hour duration that contains 65 questions carrying a maximum of 100 marks. The question paper will consist of both multiple choice questions (MCQ) and numerical answer type (NAT) questions
GATE 2016 would contain questions of two different types Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) and Numerical Answer Questions
The Questions are designed test the following abilities of recollecting and comprehension.
For 1 mark multiple‐choice questions, 1/3 marks will be deducted for a wrong answer. Likewise, for 2mark multiple‐choice questions, 2/3 marks will be deducted for a wrong answer. There is NO negative marking for numerical answer type questions
In all papers, General Aptitude questions carry a total of 15 marks. The GA section includes 5 questions carrying 1mark each (sub‐total 5 marks) and 5 questions carrying 2-marks each (sub‐total 10 marks)
All candidates have to apply only Online. Candidates have to register and fill the application via Online Mode Only by accessing the zonal GATE websites of IISc and any of the seven IITs. Students must note that no application form is available for sale anywhere.
The date for the exam is scheduled to be 30th and 31st January 2016 (Saturday) and 02.00 PM to 05.00 PM – 06th and 07th February 2016 (Sunday).The Announcement of Results on the Online Application Website: 19th March 2016 (17.00 Hrs) (Saturday)
