Government increases Dearness Allowance (DA) for central government employees by 8 %

The Central Government has announced 8 per cent Dearness Allowance (DA) for central government employees. The new DA will be applicable from January 1, 2010.

The increase in DA has been announced to compensate for price rise.

The decision to increase the DA for the central government employee was taken at a Cabinet meeting, presided over by prime minister Manmohan Singh, in New Delhi on today.

The hike will cost the government an additional Rs6,970 crore ($1.5 billion) each year. The dearness allowance (DA) is linked to the percentage rise in the 12-month average of the consumer price index (CPI) and is revised twice a year
